In Italian, Columbina means "little dove." She is a famous character from the Commedia dell'Arte. This clever comic servant would occasionally perform under the name Arlecchina, wearing motley clothing similar to her counterpart, Arlecchino. She was also known to wear heavy makeup around her eyes and carry a tambourine, which she used to fend off the amorous advances of Pantalone.
